Robot Overlords

Two words you wouldn’t expect in the same sentence: ‘kitchen-sink’ and ‘robots’. Ok that’s three words. Either way, that’s what Jon Wright’s third feature serves up and it’s a really quite bizarre concoction, one indeed that doesn’t particularly work. Robot Overlords is basically what happens if you cross EastEnders with Battlestar Galactica; alien robots invade the planet, on the premise of studying humans who they lock away in their homes with tracking devices on their necks, which if they go outside summon robot gunships that blow them to smithereens - but a group of plucky young Laaaandaaaners discover not only is there a (remarkably easy to create) flaw in the robots tech which allows them outside, but lo and behold…

  • With the talents of GILLIAN ANDERSON and BEN KINGSLEY you expect something special, but instead we get something so mediocre and bland i ALMOST turned off before the end
Without those two big names i am pretty sure this movie would have disappeared into oblivion without a trace of publicity.

  • I know this movie is only 90 minutes long, but I swear I felt like I was watching this for about 6 hours. The plot, writing, and special effects are all on par with with a Syfy channel original film, and not in a laughable way. Well I guess some of it is actually pretty hilarious with how bad it is, but still it just stinks. I wasn't expecting this to be anything spectacular, but I at least expected some dumb/badass robot action sequences and there was close none of that. It's mostly just people walking around and then occasionally hiding from robots. I will say that the acting actually isn't all that bad, but the script they're working with…

  • One of the weirdest cinema releases of the year.

Even though the poster art is absolutely terrible, Robot Overlords is a relatively well made film for the most part. The effects range from surprisingly impressive to hilariously bad, but the cinematography is good and the performances largely don't suck.

Still, there's not much here you haven't seen before and the script itself is an unsavoury blend of corny and bland. The abundance of bad language is itself quite strange, considering that the film is being marketed as a family film. I counted the following expletives during my viewing, some of which are used several times: bullshit, tits, balls, arse, sheize, shit, crap, shitbag, bastard, shagging, bollocks, shat, and even a…
